Is everyone else as indifferent about this as I am? I mean, he's done a solid job and all, but he has taken us from awful to decent, which definitely helps but does not define the program. The key is the 2nd hire, the one that takes you from decent to either a solid program or back to crap.
Good Hires Utah: Meyer to Whittingham TCU: Franchione to Patterson Boise: Hawkins to Petersen
Bad Hires Ball St: Hoke to Parrish Tulane: Bowden to Scelfo New Mex: Long to Locksley
So if he leaves, he leaves. Can't do much about that. Who we get to replace him will be the most important hire in the history of the program.

Would Rocky Long stepping in be seen as a big step down?
I think the thing that has to stay consistent, whomever is hired, is the mindset of the staff and players. For years we had alot of "player's coaches", from Luginbill to Tollner to Craft to Long, and I think the current environment has brought about a sense of respect and toughness not seen here for awhile.

Rocky would be the safe pick but not a difference maker. His hire would say a lot about the mindset of the school.
Do you want to win 7-8 games every year and go to a bowl game? Hire Rocky.
Do you want to try to take the next step and be the 2015 version of Boise or TCU? Then hire someone else who has the potential to grow with the program.
The problem is that the big hires (Patterson, Whitingham, Petersen, etc) were all younger guys that were already on the coaching staff. Do we have that guy on this staff? And do we have the balls to hire him over Long or Borges?

If we did it would be Hecklinski, I've heard nothing but great things about him from the guys. He's already associate HC. Problem is, he's Hoke's boy and I have no clue if he would stay behind.

I would thnk Rocky would be a lock to replace Hoke if he were to leave.
It's not th worst thing in the world since we have 2 very capable coordinators. And I assume Rocky would run the defense even if he were head coach.
But I hear one of hte biggest losses would be Coach Wellman. Strength and Conditioning. Apparently hes one of the best in the nation and is one of the biggest reasons why our O Line and D line have improvd so much.
